Gaschromatographie
Gas chromatography (GC) is used, for example, to separate and determine the components of mixtures of volatile or semi-volatile compounds (VOCs). Applications for this technique can be found in environmental science and forensics.
In gas chromatography, the mobile phase is typically an inert gas, and the compounds being analyzed interact with the stationary phase within the column. The samples are volatile and separated on a column. The technique is particularly powerful when a mass spectrometer is used as a detector, as this allows for the direct characterization and identification of individual components.
The use of water within the gas chromatography process is quite limited; however, water is required for sample preparation. Additionally, water is used for blank sample preparation and sample standards if the sample to be analyzed is aqueous.
